ProHeartMD – Protecting an athlete’s most valuable asset
Being a professional athlete can be both physically and mentally demanding. The pressure to perform at such a high-level combined with the stresses of a high profile job make professional athletes extremely prone to stress related illnesses. The Boone Heart Institute developed the ProHeartMD Program to provide stress assessment and cardiovascular risk testing for active professional athletes. A healthy heart and vascular system are central to maintaining optimum physical performance levels, as well as a long, happy life.
The Boone Heart Institute is also deeply invested in caring for retired professional athletes. In the years following retirement, former athletes often see their health decline rapidly due to a dramatic decrease in daily physical activity. The combination of the stress put on your heart during their playing days and this dramatic lifestyle change can lead to tragic results. Within five years of retirement, every retired professional athlete should have a full examination to get a picture of their cardiovascular status as they begin the next phase of their life.
The following groups are actively involved in the ProHeartMD program. We believe they should be looked at as the gold standard for player care in professional sports.
Denver Broncos Dr. Boone is the Preventive Cardiology Consultant for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League and was the Co-Founder and Medical Director of “The Denver Broncos Alumni – Tackling Heart Disease and Stroke” program from 2003 through 2006. The Broncos are leading the way in professional athletics with their cutting edge approach to player health. They are the pilot organization for the ProHeartMD program, and continue to pioneer new preventive approaches, investing in the health of their team and organization.
Colorado Rockies In 2009, the Boone Heart Institute initiated ProHeartMD testing with the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball. The Rockies’ health care standards are the best in Major League Baseball. Every spring training, screening is performed to make sure the Rockies remain in peak condition.
NFL Alumni
Dr. Boone is the National Co-Director of the NFL Player Care Foundation Cardiovascular Program sponsored by the NFL, the NFL Player’s Association, the NFL Hall of Fame, and the NFL Alumni Association. In addition, he serves on the NF: Cardiovascular Committee. The Boone Heart Institute directs the Program throughout the western United States andunder this Program, all Alumni of the NFL can be screened once free of charge.
